Effect of adiabatic index on Richtmyer–Meshkov flows induced by strong shocks

Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability is an instability that develops at the interface between fluids of distinct acoustic impedance when impacted by a shock wave. Its applications include inertial confinement fusion, supernovae explosions, and evolution blast waves. We systematically study effect adiabatic index on dynamics strong-shock-driven flows, particularly amount energy available for interfacial mixing. Only limited information currently about dynamic properties matter these extreme regimes. employ smooth particle hydrodynamics simulations to ensure accurate capturing tracking. A range indexes considered, approaching limits which, best author's knowledge, have never been considered before. analyze speed growth rate immediately after passage. The simulation results are compared wherever possible with rigorous theories, achieving good quantitative qualitative agreement. find more challenging cases arise where further apart, initial non-monotone function perturbation amplitude, which holds across all considered. findings experiment design discussed.
